Signature Ingredients

In Cashmere & Co we specialize in using Fynbos essential oils that grow only in the Western Cape in South Africa in all our signature fragrances. The Western Cape Floral Kingdom is one of the six floral kingdoms of the world. Fynbos, the heath-like vegetation characteristic of the region is the most botanically rich habitat on earth. The Western Cape Floral Kingdom is both the smallest and the richest floral kingdom in the world, with the highest known concentration of plant species: 1 300 per 10 000 km2. It has an even higher level of plant diversity than tropical rainforests. There are over 9000 species of plants occurring in the fynbos area, of which around 6200 are endemic.

We use mostly fynbos essential oils that are specially cultivated for use in cosmetics:

Cape May - coleonema album
Cape May is known as aasbossie ("bait bush") because it occurs predominantly along the coastal area of the Southern Cape of South Africa and was used by fishermen to rid their hands of the stench of red bait.  The plant was also traditionally used as an insect repellant and for the treatment of colds and flu.  The oil is clear in colour, with a fresh herby fragrance and a marked pepper note.  It has an unusually clean fragrance, is an excellent antioxidant and deodoriser removing strong odours. Immune system booster. Emotionally it encourages positive thought. On the skin it refreshes and invigorates while leaving a pleasant herbal scent.

Cape Geranium - Pelargonium graeolens
Cape Geranium oil is extracted through steam distillation of stems and leaves of the geranium plant. Geranium oil is nontoxic, non-irritant and generally non-sensitizing — and the therapeutic properties include being an antidepressant, an antiseptic and wound-healing. Geranium oil may also be one of the best oils for such diverse dermatological problems as oily or congested skin, eczema, and dermatitis.

Cape Chamomile - Eriocephalus Punctulatus
This is one of the oils we use mostly for calming and relaxation blends. It has fantastic relaxing properties, both on the mind and the body. It is often used to treat depression and anxiety and is a great oil for insomniacs. Physically it is used to treat muscle pain and is even used to treat arthritis. Just to add to everything else it is also used to treat dermatitis, hay-fever, acne, infections and toothache! Truly an amazing oil!

Cape Snowbush - Eriocephalus Africanus
In the same family as Cape Chamomile this oils also has wonderful healing properties. We use it in our hair products as it helps to balance the scalp, treat dandruff and promote hair growth, it also has a wonderful aroma leaving hair feeling and smelling fresh. It is also used to treat coughs, and colds, and is actually used in some Vicks preparations!
